Original Article: A Big Loss

by Jimmy Boegle

We’re coming to the end of one doozy of a year. Everyone knows it’s been a rough year for those of us who toil in the newspaper business, but I had no idea how rough it has truly been until I read Joe Strupp’s list of the Top 10 2009 newspaper-business stories at editorandpublisher.com. The No. 1 story on his list was the fact that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 40,000 newspaper jobs were eliminated…

Original Article: The Opinion Shuffle

by Jimmy Boegle

Some informational tidbits … • Thanks to the readers who took the time to submit Get Out of Town! nominees. You can see the readers’ choice dishonorees for which we had room on Page 22, at the end of our Get Out of Town! package. • You’ll see that we’ve shuffled some things around in the dead-tree-version Opinion section this week. Don’t worry; all of the columns and cartoons you love (and/or hate) are still there. We made the changes…

Original Article: Confidential to …

by Jimmy Boegle

• Confidential to readers who confuse Jonathan Paton and Jonathan Hoffman: They’re two rather different people. A reader last week told me that he’s been upset at Paton—a Republican state senator who is considering a run for Congress—ever since he wrote a Guest Commentary (July 30) criticizing Tucsonans who still have Obama bumper stickers on their cars. The problem is, that commentary was written by Jonathan Hoffman—a libertarian blogger, radio-show host and frequent Tucson Weekly Guest Commentary writer. I explained…

Original Article: Last Chance to Kick Out

by Jimmy Boegle

Some holiday housekeeping matters this week: • If you have not sent in your readers’ Get Out of Town! submission yet, then get on it ASAP, because this is your last chance: The deadline is noon, Wednesday, Dec. 9. Here’s a quick recap of the rules: Try to keep submissions to 150 words or fewer. Please try not to kick out people/places/whatever which have been previously kicked out of town in the Tucson Weekly. Use your real name—after all, we…

Original Article: The Theme of the Week

by Jimmy Boegle

Things for which we should all be thankful: • Tim Vanderpool’s impressive reporting. Be sure to check out his story on the Pima Animal Care Center on Page 18. It’s a heartbreaking piece examining the successes and failures of PACC—and our society as well. The bottom line: We’re letting many, many thousands of animals per year get killed that don’t need to be killed. One thing for which I am decidedly not thankful: The attitude of Pima County Health Department…

Original Article: Econ 101

by Jimmy Boegle

The big question indirectly posted by this week’s issue: So, is the economy rebounding? I don’t know the answer to that question, and, frankly, I don’t think anybody else does, either. However, Stephen Phinny, the developer behind the controversial northwest-side Saguaro Ranch development, thinks his fortunes (Saguaro Ranch is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy) will be turning around after Thanksgiving. And they’d better, for his sake: Saguaro Ranch reportedly hasn’t sold a lot since early 2008. Check out Mari Herreras’…

Original Article: The Future

by Jimmy Boegle

Every so often, an unplanned theme seems to miraculously emerge from an issue of the Tucson Weekly. It’s happened this week. The theme: The future of Southern Arizona. In Opinion, Tom Danehy weighs in with some thoughts on the future of city government and the arts, while Irene Messina makes the case that Tucson needs to stop pretending to be a small town. Meanwhile, in our Currents section, Leo W. Banks reports on what scientists fear buffelgrass could do to…

Original Article: Online and Upcoming

by Jimmy Boegle

Stuff worth noting this week: • I am sure you’ll just love our Yum! dining guide this week, and after that, we have a ton of other special issues coming up. Mark your calendars: Our Gift Guide hits the streets on Nov. 19, with its companion piece, our last-minute GASP! gift guide, coming out on Dec. 10. That will be followed by our year-end trifecta: Get Out of Town! (Dec. 17), Local Heroes (Dec. 24) and the Year in Review…

Original Article: Critics!

by Jimmy Boegle

Regular readers know that our longtime theater critic, James Reel, recently “retired” from the Tucson Weekly (although he’s still stepping in to help out when I am on vacation, and for that, I thank him). The theater-reviewing duties have been taken up by two people: Sherilyn Forrester and Nathan Christensen. I asked each of them to write up a bio, and here they are (edited for space). Sherilyn Forrester: Scene: A darkened stage. A spotlight cuts the dark revealing Sherilyn…

Original Article: Looking Back

by Jimmy Boegle

Last week’s issue garnered a substantial amount of response. First, the good news: While I was unable to attend Pride in the Desert last weekend (I was in Phoenix at the Arizona Newspapers Association annual convention), the Tucson Weekly folks who manned our booth said numerous people stopped by to thank us for doing last week’s Pride section. As I mentioned last week, we plan on making the Pride section a regular quarterly part of the Weekly. Look for the…
