Esquire talks to Congressman Raul Grijalva about SB 1070:
ESQ: It seems like once a generation or so we have a spasm of anti-immigrant fervor in this country, and it’s been that way since the beginning. We’ve been going through such a period in the last half a dozen years or so. Why do you think it’s had such a profound effect and actually gotten such incredible results in Arizona? The litany of legislation that you just recited for me — why have the stars aligned in to make Arizona the laboratory for all this?RG: That’s a great question, Mark. I think that it is the growing population here of Latinos. The population continues to grow and it’s the fastest growing. At some point soon it’s one out of every three kids coming into kindergarten is going to be Latino in this state. It’s not as simple as just being nativist. This growing population is seen as a threat. Whether it’s Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck, Michael Savage, you name it, it’s just feeding and feeding. Here’s what 1070 did. Underlying the issue of immigration here in Arizona and in other parts has been the issue of race. But what 1070 did, both in Arizona and on a national level, is put the question of race front and center in the debate. Now that’s part of the issue, a big part of the issue. It was always there, but now it’s out in the open.

If Rasmussen is doing business as usual, we’ll get some more poll results this week. What do you bet that Gov. Jan Brewer will be shown to be crushing Democrat Terry Goddard? We’d also wager that McCain holds a double-digit lead over Hayworth and that both of them beat the potential Democratic nominees. And what will the Democratic Senate primary look like? Low support for all the candidates and a lot of undecided voters?

- State Sen. Al Melvin (R-LD26)
Republican state Senator Al Melvin declined a challenge by his Democratic contender, Cheryl Cage, to a series of one-on-one debates before the November general election, saying he can’t fit it into his schedule.
“I told her I’m busy,” Melvin says. “I’m going door to door.”
Cage, who lost the Legislative District 26 Senate race to Melvin in 2008 by fewer than 2,000 votes, says she thinks Melvin won’t debate her because he would have to defend his “abysmal” voting record.
“I mean, it’s completely against what the voters of LD26 want,” she says. “He voted for payday loan people to stay in business and 63 percent of our constituents voted against that. He voted 100 percent of the time against public education and we passed Prop 100 by a two-to-one margin.”

U.S. Senate candidate Rodney Glassman may be ducking the chance to debate his fellow Democrats, but he’s willing to let us know about his political fashion statements. This just in from the Glassman campaign:
U.S. Senate candidate Rodney Glassman announced today that he will be adding an Arizona flag pin to his lapel, right next to his American flag pin, as a symbol of his dedication and commitment to the people of Arizona first.
Meanwhile, U.S. Senate candidate John Dougherty delivered a boring press release calling for accountability in defense spending. Like anyone cares about that:
A bipartisan Congressional report released Friday outlines a plan for cutting defense spending by nearly $1 trillion — approximately 10 percent of the projected budget — over 10 years without threatening national security or reducing funds for ongoing wars. The Sustainable Defense Task Force is offering cost-cutting proposals covering the full range of Pentagon expenditures: procurement, research and development, personnel, operations and maintenance, and infrastructure. For details, visit http://www.c-spanarchives.org/program/294024-1&showFullAbstract=1.
“I support the bi-partisan task force’s cost-cutting recommendations, particularly regarding a new array of expensive weapons systems that are prone to failure and huge cost overruns,” Arizona Democratic Senate candidate John Dougherty said. “Reducing unnecessary military spending is a crucial step in cutting the nation’s unsustainable budget deficit.”
Dougherty said that he supports quick and orderly

We told you in The Skinny this week that William Wallace, a Democrat seeing a House seat in Legislative District 26, was likely to face a challenge to his nominating petitions. Sure enough, he’s among the candidates fighting to stay on the ballot.
Also, Republican Tom Gordon has dropped out of the governor’s race after a challenge from Buz Mills. It’s too early to speculate on where his 1 percent of the vote will go.
Joe Sweeney is facing a challenge, too.
