The use of hard plastic resins to repair auto windshields can now make a damaged windshield stronger than when it was new. But not all Phoenix auto glass services are using the newest and best systems. It is worthwhile when choosing a company to ask them what technology they are using. Using outdated systems can cost you more down the road and can be a threat to your safety when driving your car.

Windshield glass consists of three layers: a poly layer is sandwiched between outside and inside layers of glass. The flexibility of the middle layer prevents splintering and provides strength to the roof of the automobile. When the outside layer gets a crack or a hole from an object that hits it, air leaks into the poly layer causing contamination. This contamination can be so small that even water can not leak in but the air will result in a brownish stain inside of the windshield. It is important for the technician to remove all the air from the damaged area before a plastic resin is injected.

Older repair system remove the air from the damaged area through the same apparatus that injects the resin. In fact the air must pass through the resin. An innovative method call prism dry suction does not force the air through the resin. A big advantage of using the prism system is that the technician can be assured that all the air is removed. This greatly simplifies the entire process and gives much better results.

In order to avoid future problems of a totally shattered windshield and, perhaps, injuries to you and your family, always inquire if the repair companies are using the latest dry suction systems. Ask them to show you the equipment and explain how it works. Good companies will have illustrated brochures that will explain how it works to ordinary people.

Another pitfall to avoid is to make sure you are talking to the people who are going to do the repair. Sometimes you may think you are talking to a repair service but you are really talking to a third party referral service that may be located in another state or even another country. Using a search engine on the internet is fine as long as you ask the right questions. Do not try to find just the cheapest price through a third party search engine. Remember you often get what you pay for. Keep in mind that the unbelievably low price they quote you might be because they are using poor quality materials and unskilled technicians. Again asking the right questions can keep you from problems down the road. The cheapest price might not be the best price in the long run.

A good company will always back up their work with a warranty. Make sure to get all estimates in writing. Keep in mind that the health of you and your family depend on quality work. Imagine the tragedy of your windshield shattering while traveling 75 miles per hour on a highway.

So while there are many Scottsdale auto glass companies that are easy to find via the internet or in the phone book it is worthwhile to ask those important questions: are they using the latest and best techniques, are the technicians well trained, do they back up their work with warranties? The answers to these question are important to both your pocketbook and your safety.

 By SETH BORENSTEIN
AP Science Writer

First the ground shook in Haiti, then Chile and now Turkey. The earthquakes keep coming hard and fast this year, causing people to wonder if something sinister is happening underfoot.

It's not.

While it may seem as if there are more earthquakes occurring, there really aren't. The problem is what's happening above ground, not underground, experts say.

More people are moving into megacities that happen to be built on fault lines, and they're rapidly putting up substandard buildings that can't withstand earthquakes, scientists say.

And around-the-clock news coverage and better seismic monitoring make it seem as if earthquakes are ever-present.

"I can definitely tell you that the world is not coming to an end," said Bob Holdsworth, an expert in tectonics at Durham University in northern England, referring to the number of quakes.

A 7.0 magnitude quake last month killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti. Less than two weeks ago, an 8.8 magnitude quake - the fifth-strongest since 1900 - killed more than 900 people in Chile. And on Monday, a strong pre-dawn 6.0 magnitude quake struck rural eastern Turkey, killing at least 51 people.

On average, there are 134 earthquakes a year that have a magnitude between a 6.0 and 6.9, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This year is off to a fast start with 40 so far - more than in most years for that time period.

But that's because the 8.8 quake in Chile generated a large number of strong aftershocks, and so many occurring this early in the year skews the picture, said Paul Earle, a seismologist at the U.S. Geological Survey.

Also, it's not the number of quakes, but their devastating impacts that gain attention with the death tolls largely due to construction standards and crowding, Earle said.

"The standard mantra is earthquakes don't kill people, buildings do," he said.

There have been more deaths over the past decade from earthquakes, said University of Colorado geologist Roger Bilham, who just returned from Haiti. In an opinion column last month in the journal Nature, Bilham called for better construction standards in the world's megacities. Last year his study of earthquake deaths, population, quake size and other factors produced disturbing results. And that was before Haiti, Chile and Turkey.

"We found four times as many deaths in the last 10 years than in the previous 10 years," Bilham told The Associated Press Monday. "That's definitely up and scary."

Other experts said they too have noticed a general increase in earthquake deaths. The World Health Organization tallied than 453,000 deaths from earthquakes from 2000 to 2009, up markedly from the previous two decades. In the 1970s, however, a massive quake in China killed about 440,000 people.

But those numbers fluctuate every year. Statisticians say the hit-or-miss nature of earthquake fatalities makes it hard to see a trend in deaths.

A quick analysis by two statistics experts found no statistically significant upward trend since the 1970s because of the variability - despite the earthquake experts' perceptions that deaths have been rising, at least since the 1980s.

The Haiti quake likely set a modern record for deaths per magnitude of earthquake "solely as a function of too many people crammed into a city that wasn't meant to have that many people and have an earthquake," said University of Miami geologist Tim Dixon.

Disaster experts say they've seen more deaths especially from quakes that wouldn't have been as bad decades ago. They point to two in Turkey and India - a 1999 earthquake in Izmit that killed 18,000 and the 2001 disaster that killed 20,000 in Bhuj.

"Look at some of the big ones recently," said Debarati Guha-Sapir, director of the WHO's disaster epidemiology research center. "Had the Izmit or Bhuj quakes happened 30 years ago, the events would have been relatively insignificant as the population of these cities were a third of what it was when it did happen. Increasing population density makes a small event into a big one."

Disaster and earthquake experts say the problem will only worsen. Of the 130 cities worldwide with more than 1 million population, more than half are on fault lines, making them more prone to earthquakes, Bilham said.

"I've calculated more than 400 million people at risk just from those," he said.

Developing nations, where the population is booming, also don't pay attention to earthquake preparedness, Bilham said. "If you have a problem feeding yourself, you're not really going to worry about earthquakes."

He said he when he went to Haiti after the January quake, he had hope that construction would be quake-proof because of the emphasis on it. Instead, people rebuilt their houses their old unsafe ways.

Another reason quakes seems worse is that we're paying attention more. The phenomenon of Haiti quickly followed by the 8.8 in Chile got everyone's attention.

But it won't last, said disaster researcher Dennis Mileti, a former seismic safety commissioner for the state of California.

"People are paying attention to the violent planet we've always lived in," Mileti said. "Come back in another six months if there has been no earthquakes, most people will have forgotten it again."

Developing nations, where the population is booming, also don’t pay attention to earthquake preparedness, Bilham said. “If you have a problem feeding yourself, you’re not really going to worry about earthquakes.”

He said he when he went to Haiti after the January quake, he had hope that construction would be quake-proof because of the emphasis on it. Instead, people rebuilt their houses their old unsafe ways.

Another reason quakes seems worse is that we’re paying attention more. The phenomenon of Haiti quickly followed by the 8.8 in Chile got everyone’s attention.

But it won’t last, said disaster researcher Dennis Mileti, a former seismic safety commissioner for the state of California.

“People are paying attention to the violent planet we’ve always lived in,” Mileti said. “Come back in another six months if there has been no earthquakes, most people will have forgotten it again.”

If you have ever driven down a newly laid road too close behind another vehicle then you will be all too aware of the problems relating to a chipped windshield. It is far too easy to end up with damage that obstructs your vision. What may start off as a small chip or crack can quickly and silently extend throughout the glass. Should this problem sound familiar to you then you have two options: you can replace the full windscreen or possibly have the damage repaired. Before you visit or contact a Phoenix auto glass specialist you should learn a little more about the topic so that you choose the right firm.

The cost and time associated with replacing or repairing a windshield will vary massively. It is essential to know which is best for your situation as then you can adequately budget and plan for the repair work. Keep in mind that to change a windshield and fit a replacement can take all day; it is essential that the glass bonds to the frame correctly. If it does not then you may find water seeping in and also it will become a serious hazard.

It will be useful if you can get as many quotes as you can. You will find in Phoenix that there are many companies that can carry out the work professionally. By comparing the costs and experience you will be able to get the best value for your money.

Without knowing the rules that govern when a windshield needs to be replaced you may easily find yourself talked into paying for a new pane of glass when it was not actually required. Whether or not you can make do with a simple repair to the windshield will depend upon the location and extent of the damage; those cracks in the center have a tendency to spread faster.

As soon as you notice any damage you should seek out help. The longer you wait the greater the problem will be and more expensive to fix.

If you were to only pay for a repair then the cost will not be much, possibly less than fifty dollars. For a full replacement you will need to find upwards of two hundred bucks.

If you do not know were to locate a selection of Phoenix auto repair specialists then you should search online. There is a wealth of information relating to such professionals in and around Phoenix available on the internet.

Technicians that work in the area of auto glass repairs are known for their efficiency and willingness to help without delay. At Phoenix Auto Glass employees have at least ten years experience in the field, therefore proffering an expert service to their clients. Keeping a high standard of professionalism, staff give free quotes that honestly depict the best outcome for their clients.

For chipped and cracked windscreens, a repair is made using a clear resin that can blend in with the auto glass and appear as good as new. It has adhesive qualities so be assured once it is repaired, chips and cracks will not need a second coating. The windscreen will not need any reinforcement after the initial restoration.

It is a quick process that will take about thirty minutes to perform. The reliability of the original auto part is kept intact and the customer has saved on the cost of a replacement if the chips are fixed in time. If the chip is no bigger than a fifty cent piece, it is safe to use the resin filler and the windscreen will keep it’s perfect clarity. Cracks need to be less than one foot long.

A road-worthy check will have a vehicle passed if the damage was seen to straight away. This means a more expensive procedure has been avoided. If a replacement has been rendered then a test drive to ensure there are no leaks is needed. When being built the vehicle had urethane to set the windscreen into place. A good quality glue such as this is needed to make sure it sets correctly.

Service vehicles that are totally outfitted with all the parts needed for the job will arrive at your most convenient address, home or work. The job will provide the correct sized windscreen of the clients choice using the best urethane and ensure it is fitted well. Technicians stay with the job until it is completely set.

The process of a repair involves placing a mirror beneath the problem to give an accurate visual description to the technician. The damaged part is cleaned of excess debris, including small chips of glass and dried in preparation fro the resin. A tool especially designed for the repair job, called a piston, sucks out the air in the chip or crack. This ensures clarity in the repair. The resin is applied and a film covers it to keep it in position until it dries.

To make the job hard-set an ultra violet light is used. Once this is done, a quick wash and polish of the windscreen finishes the job. The Phoenix Auto Glass technicians are happy to be of service and offer discounted prices on all auto glass.

The economy is pretty tight. That means that people are trying to spend less money. And that also means that people are attempting to find DIY ideas for wedding receptions that will decrease costs. But doing it yourself is NOT worth the trouble unless the results are going to be utterly fabulous.

This list of quick and easy DIY ideas can make a difference to the look and the cost of wedding receptions:

1. Tackle the centerpieces. They can be a big expense, but they can also be completed quite simply with an elegant result. And there are many DIY ideas that can be taken on by even the most novice of crafters/DIYers.

Start with a simple bowl and a Styrofoam ball. Place the ball in the bowl. Now place nice, silk flowers evenly and throughout the Styrofoam ball. Throw in some longer greenery randomly to give the arrangement a whimsical look. Another option is to gather glass vases of varying sizes and fill them with different types of candy that comes in the colors used at the wedding receptions. Another option is unique to each reception. You could put together a centerpiece that is directly related to the bride and/or groom. One such arrangement we’ve seen consisted of antique vases (a variety, of course) filled with fresh flowers.

2. Wedding receptions can have great favors. Favors have been a long time tradition at wedding receptions. Some easy DIY suggestions for favors include: CDs, matchboxes, and seed packets.

CD compilations can reflect the taste of the bride and groom. They can be a copy of the music played during the event. They can be meaningful songs to the bride and groom, etc. Matchboxes can be personalized to actually be a record of the event with date, time, venue name, etc. Seed packets are always a classic favor for wedding receptions. They are usable and they’re a great gift.

3. DIYing the Guest Book: Guests books are very traditional. But some are very expensive and can seem like a wasted expense; especially when you consider how many times the book is perused post-wedding (not often; sometimes never).

One clever DIY alternative for a guest book at wedding receptions is to matte and frame an enlarged engagement photo. Set the matted photo on an easel to serve as the guest book. Guests can sign the matte as they arrive/leave. It replaces the traditional bound guest book. It turns into a fun first family photo for the wall of the newlyweds first home.

DIY projects really lend themselves to wedding receptions because the wedding is such an individual, unique experience. DIY projects actually add something personal to the mix that can make the event stand out amongst the crowd and solidify the day in the minds of the bridal party and the guests as a day to remember. And that’s in addition to the fact that it takes the costs down drastically!
