Original Article: Avra Valley firefighters wants their chief to resign

By Dan Marries  email

AVRA VALLEY, AZ (KOLD) – Avra Valley Fire Fighters are speaking out against their own chief. 14 of the department’s 17 employees signed a letter of “no confidence” directed at Chief Tom Nix.

They’re asking for Chief Nix to resign claiming he doesn’t have the education needed to be chief and accusing him of an embezzlement scheme.

Nix took over as chief in January 2008 at a tumultuous time for the small department which serves roughly 10,000 customers in southern Pinal County and northern Pima County.

Things began to unravel following an accident on Interstate-10 near Picacho Peak two and a half years ago. On March 14, 2007 a semi hauling hazardous materials collided with a car.

The collision shut down I-10 for several hours. The state slapped the department with massive fines saying the accident was not handled properly.

Chief Nix says he was blind sided by these latest allegations and is considering legal action for the embezzlement accusation.
